I have suffered from chronic and often severe lower back pain for 40 years, beginning with my first horse riding accident at 15. As an HSS HSP (High Sensation Seeker), there have been many other injuries. I have tried every treatment within the western, eastern and holistic worlds, including surgeries, other invasive procedures, medications and hundreds of physical therapy sessions. I’ve experienced some relief with these dozens of remedies, but never enduring relief.
A dear friend recently suggested that I read Dr. John Sarno’s book “Healing Back Pain.” Dr. Sarno has extensive scientific research of what he believes to be the culprit for many back sufferers called “Tension Myosistis Syndrome” or TMS. He basically attributes TMS to mild oxygen deprivation to the surrounding muscles and tissues due to unresolved emotions, namely anger. I know. My reaction was the same. After SO many treatments and suffering, how demeaning to be told it could be all in my mind. Yes, I have many MRIs over the years revealing fully herniated discs, missing discs, bone spurs, etc. Dr. Sarno explains how this phenomena is possible.
I can only tell you that 4 weeks into practicing Dr. Sarno’s mind-body exercises, something miraculous is happening. He suggests vigorous exercise as part of the program which has terrified me for years, anticipating not being able to get out of bed the next morning. However, I am doing yoga, dancing, jumping-jacks and even jogging, and I am fine. Sure, some expected soreness from many neglected muscles, but I am FINE! To me it is no less than a miracle. You simply must read his book, as TMS can migrate and affect the neck, shoulders, hips and knees, fibromyalgia, etc. Since this blog series has been focusing on HSPs and the mind-body connection, what better timing! And since we HSPs are so very cerebral, what better approach then to use those busy minds to heal years of debilitating pain.
I just had to share with you and with everyone. I hope you will take it to heart and sing Hallelujah along with me soon! What have you got to lose? Other than more years of living only half a life due to chronic pain and spending the other half of your life going to doctors and receiving more unsuccessful treatments!
